How to Find Greater Happiness In Life By Being Grateful

Why are so many people miserable and unhappy?

The truth is that most people just don’t know how to be happy. They don’t know how to take simple pleasures in everyday life. And even when they have a lot to be happy about, they're often so focused on what's lacking in their lives... that they miss the positive things.

What ever you focus on becomes magnified in your mind. If you're always noticing all the things you do not like or what's lacking in your life... then you will be more miserable.

If you take the time to notice and appreciate the positive things in your life  —  and try to be grateful for the things you already have, you can find greater happiness in life.

I think the more that happiness is located in circumstances outside of myself the more helpless I'll be about my own happiness.

I think doing what you love puts you on the path to happiness because you've taken charge of your own happiness, but it's not even particularly about doing those things. Life is full of routines and not inherently happy activities -- Washing dishes, paying bills, running errands, driving to work, getting dressed, doing laundry, brushing one's teeth, taking a shower, tidying up, etc., etc. etc. I think we tend to think of these in-between moments as stuff to get through so that we can get to the part of life that makes us happy. Unfortunately, I think this has us tuning out and not being happy through a huge part of our life.

Alex Shalman's blog had a "happiness project" where he interviewed dozens of experts about happiness. Here's a good one:
